Format

Jolting implies a necessarily increasing acceleration
in learning as well.

Challenge

Today’s digital environments, online webinars, conferences, and classes, is that they are obsessively emulating the features of physical events. They look like the movies when cinema has just been invented, and everyone thought they should resemble theater, with a frontal shoot of a fixed scene.

  • Did you ever wish that a speaker made available the materials of a conference?
  • Have you ever tried to jot down a reference, and missed because the next slide covered it?
  • Were you queued up to ask a question to the speaker but the moderator cut the Q&A session short in name of the sacred agenda of the conference?
  • Was it hard to get more in depth on a subject because the organizers failed to put the material online?

Jolting Learning

Jolting Learning is an innovative format that leverages this understanding, and provides a superior learning experience:

  • Short video series of around five minutes that can be easily absorbed at a single sitting, both on computer and mobile. Available any time to the participants.
  • Subtitles on the videos, in many languages, and transcription of the videos for those who prefer reading instead of watching.
  • Ranked questions: the participants can ask questions, and vote on the questions asked by others, with the most interesting questions listed first.
  • Dedicated Q&A session, with the ranked questions, and the opportunity for the participants to ask follow-up questions.
  • Annotated transcription of the Q&A session, with references, websites linked throughout for easy access.
  • Curated list of articles and websites that allow futher readings and experimentation.
  • Ongoing updates facilitated by the modular architecture.

Opportunity

The opportunity instead is there to radically rethink, what is lacking in physical events, and design digital experiences that improve on them, offering superior features that participants appreciate.

Content And Platform

The Jolting Format, as well as its benefits, is independent from the platform within which it is implemented and from the content that is presented. The Jolting Courses represent a leading edge reference implementation that in itself is valuable, both in terms of the information that its subscribers learn, as well as the methods of learning that they acquire.

Structure Of The Meetings

Each seminar is divided into an exposition and an interactive question and answer Q&A session. In order to maximize the flexibility for the participants, the video recording of the exposition is made available about a week in advance and the participants can watch it at their chosen time.

The interactive Q&A sessions are approximately an hour long, and allow the speaker and the attendees to analyze the material provided and to address the topics from different angles relevant for the participants.

Guest Speakers

According to the 10 seminars chosen by the client, leading thinkers and experts in such fields are invited to participate and provide an insider’s look geared towards the specific challenges of their specialization.

Approach

It is important to realize that the speakers, invited experts and participants form a de facto peer group. It is the nature of our times to recognize how experts cannot claim to be such without having an open mind to contamination from other specializations and how everybody is naturally surprised with an increasing frequency by radical developments around them. This type of approach is a direct consequence of non-hierarchical organizations and it leads to increasing levels of participation and to a tolerance towards mistakes.

Language

The videos and the interactive sessions are in English. According to the needs of the client it is possible to organize the simultaneous translation of the talks and the Q&A sessions, as well as the captioning and the translation of the videos.

Partecipation

The participation in the first seminar is strongly recommended by all the attendees, as it constitutes also a methodological basis for further seminars. Given that the seminars are recorded, including the Q&A sessions, missing one does not deprive the participant of the information provided, only the opportunity to interact directly.

Platforms And Materials

The interactive platform allows both written Q&A, as well as spoken and on-video communication for multiple participants. The platform requires a one-time download of an app on the computer or the mobile phone of the participants.

It is possible to participate from either a computer or from a phone, as well as, in case a reliable internet connection was not available for some participants in one or more of the meetings, by a regular call-in telephone number.

Dedicated website

The materials are conveniently accessible in a dedicated website which is set up as the calendar of the meetings is finalized. The attendees have their individual access information with username and password and are able to participate in many features, such as ranked voting on questions submitted and adding questions of their own, directly on the website, also in an asynchronous manner.

Shared Folder

An online shared folder contains the seminar materials, and allows the participants to collaborate in writing up questions, pool reference materials, add third party reports, and more.

Discussion Group

In order to support asynchronous communication, giving further opportunity for interaction, the dedicated email discussion group allows new questions and conversations to emerge in the universal medium of email.

Slides

The slides of the individual seminars are made available to the participants in the online shared folder.

Seminar Recordings

The organization includes the audio / video recording of the seminars, both the exposition as well as the Q&A, which is then uploaded in the online shared folder.

Copyright

The copyright of all the materials is retained by Jolting Technologies, and licensed to the participants of the seminar series, without a right of further distribution or use, unless separately agreed.
